One: Overview

Polyethylene terephthalate is the most important variety of thermoplastic polyester, the English name is Polyethylene terephthalate referred to as PET or PEIT (hereinafter or referred to as PET), commonly known as polyester resin. The repeating unit molar molecular mass is 192g/mol. It is a condensation polymer of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, together with PBT is collectively referred to as thermoplastic polyester, or saturated polyester. In 1946, Britain issued the first patent for preparing PET. In 1949, the British ICI formula completed the pilot test. However, after DuPont purchased the patent, a production device was established in 1953, which was the first to realize industrial production in the world. Early PET is almost all used in synthetic fibers (commonly known as polyester and dacron in China). Since the 1980 s, PET has made a breakthrough in the development of engineering plastics, and has successively developed nucleating agents and crystallization promoters. PET and PBT together as thermoplastic polyesters have become one of the five major engineering plastics.

PET is divided into fiber grade polyester chips and non-fiber grade polyester chips. ① Fiber grade polyester is used to manufacture polyester staple fiber and polyester filament, which is the raw material for polyester fiber enterprises to process fibers and related products. Polyester as the largest variety of chemical fiber production. Non-fiber grade polyester also has bottles, films and other uses, widely used in packaging industry, electronic appliances, medical and health, construction, automotive and other fields, of which packaging is the largest non-fiber application market for polyester, but also the fastest growing field of PET.

As a packaging material PET advantages:

1. Good mechanical properties, impact strength is 3~5 times of other films, good folding resistance.

2. Oil resistance, fat resistance, resistance to dilute acid, dilute alkali, resistance to most solvents.

3. Has excellent resistance to high and low temperature performance, can be used for a long time in the temperature range of 120 ℃, short-term use can withstand high temperature of 150 ℃, can withstand -70 ℃ low temperature, and high and low temperature has little effect on its mechanical properties.

4. Gas and water vapor permeability is low, both excellent gas barrier, water, oil and odor performance.

5. High transparency, can block ultraviolet rays, good gloss.

6. Non-toxic, tasteless, hygienic and safe, can be directly used for food packaging.
